Riding with Ric : Read all about it !

The Day of the Riding with Ric finally dawned.

Lottie & I were out by 7.30 for our walk.
And were pleased to see the weather - unlike so much of the last few weeks - was sunny and warm.

By 10.00 Family Piper were in the car driving to Hastings.
And by 11.30 we had arrived at our starting point of St Leonards Warrior Square Station, where we were joined by fellow riders Mark & Sam and my sister-in-law Barbara & her partner Mike.

Family Dobson – who had ridden the London to Brighton British Heart Foundation bike ride earlier in the morning (yes, that is true !) - had been delayed in heavy traffic on the road out of Brighton. We arranged they would catch up with us in Rye.

So around 11.45 we started pedalling, pausing outside 66 Warrior Square, the house where I first lived.

Along the seafront & then up the long, long climb to the Fairlight Hills. The adrenalin was flowing & much to my surprise I made it to the top without having to push.
What goes up must come down, so it was downhill all the way to Pett Level. Along the Winchelsea Beach sea wall and we were soon riding into Rye – about one-third of the ride completed -  & stopping at our first scheduled Pub; The George.

The George is the first Pub I ever went in, aged 5 weeks !
“Welcome back, Richard”, Sue, the Barmaid. “Your usual?”
It was just a half of bitter this time. But there was chance to relax on the Sofa.

Family Dobson had caught up with us & the Peloton of six were soon climbing up Rye Hill & pushing on through Peasmarsh and Beckley and across the Rother at Newenden.

On through Sandhurst and we arrived at the Oak & Ivy for our second scheduled pub stop, including food !
We were joined by the Lambournes, who had driven down from London, & by Chris Symonds, an old friend from Atkins' days, who lives nearby in Northiam.

With “just” 25 kilometres to go, the Peloton set off, through Hawkhurst, Ticehust & Wadhurst.

61 years ago this coming Saturday, on 23 June 1951 at just after 19.15 my Mum & Dad stopped at the Greyhound for a Celebratory Drink, a treble G&T for my Mum & a pint for my Dad.
With weary legs, just time for a picture:

On down past Wadhurst station & up the last of the Killer Climbs & then into Frant.

Soon we were passing the Tunbridge Wells sign and turning right into Forest Road – where as a little boy I dreamt that one day I would own one of the houses on the south side - & then down Warwick Park, past the Nevill cricket ground and our final destination of the Duke of York pub on the Pantiles.

Pints all round; in my case my first pint of 2012 !!

So many people to Thank.

My Peloton riders: Tour Manager Jeff, Team Professional  Matt & Special Guests Jonathan, Mark & Sam ‘007’ Forman.
All those who came to support on the day.
And - especially - those who Always Believed I would get to Tunbridge Wells; Dianne & Mrs D.

I’m already looking forward to Riding with Ric 2013 !!

Keep Pedalling,
   Ric

PS
So far we have raised £1,325 for the Rainbow Trust.

Thank you so much to everyone who has donated.

There’s still time to donate !!

On the Open Road

Hi everyone !

The Winter Yards have been done in the Gym and now it is time for the Open Road !

Just 4 weeks before Sunday 17 June.

I hope that many of you will be able to take part in Riding with Ric.
Do some or all of Hastings - Rye - Tunbridge Wells with me.
Or perhaps you'd rather just drive from Pub to Pub

The list of Pubs:

Or maybe you will just be following the ride on Facebook : Ric Piper.
I plan to provide updates throughout the day.

Training Regime

Hi everyone !

Since yesterday I've had a number of emails about the Training Regime for Riding with Ric.

First of all, I'm absolutely delighted to announce that Jeff Dobson has agreed to become Tour Coach and Matt Cook has agreed to become Tour Physio.
Both will be warming up for the Hastings to Tunbridge Wells ride by doing the London to Brighton British Heart Foundation ride  ... earlier on the same day !!

Jeff has now completed the Training Schedule, which as you will see is "arduous"
https://skydrive.live.com/view.aspx/.Documents/Riding%20with%20Ric%20-%20Points%20of%20Interest.doc?cid=3127d65a3a4ea866&Bsrc=SkyMail&Bpub=SDX.SkyDrive

As you may know, I am No Alcohol as from 1 January 2012  until the day of the ride.

I feel it is only right to tell you the view of a correspondent of mine:
Why are you spending six months of your life, which you will never have back, denying yourself something that gives you so much pleasure?
I've racked my brains and cannot come up with anything much more pointless.
And from a practical point of view, you need to build up your stamina if you are going to cope with a drink at each of the pubs en route.

So many great pubs along the route; here's just one we will definitely be stopping at :

The Greyhound at Wadhurst is a MUST STOP AT pub.
My Mum & Dad called in for a celebratory drink on Saturday 23 June 1951.
Dad had a pint of beer that evening  - & when we stop there on Sunday 17 June 2012, some 61 years on, I will be having a pint too !!

Keep pedalling, Ric

Recce of Ric's Ride

Hi everyone !

Jeff Dobson * very kindly accompanied me yesterday on a Recce of Ric's Ride.

* Jeff will be doing the London to Brighton British Heart Foundation bike ride earlier on the same day, immediately before my little ride

On a wonderfully warm and sunny Sunday we drove down to Hastings to begin at St Leonards Warrior Square station.

View photo.JPG in slide show

A very good start : there are two pubs within sight of the station !

We were soon driving round Warrior Square and pausing outside of No. 66, where I first lived !

Off along the Front and there was our first stopping point: the White Rock Hotel.

On 17th June will we ever remount our bikes ?
Or will be spend the rest of the day in the Pub ?

Jeff & I were soon in Hastings Old Town, passing the Blue Dolphin ( "Best fish & chips in the world" : Probably) and turning left into Old London Road for the long, long climb up to the Fairlight Hills.

Let's be honest, this is a hill for pushing your bike up quite a bit of the way !!!

On through Battery Hill, we were soon at Pett Level and driving along the Winchelsea sea wall & on into Rye.

Parking in the cricket ground car park & walking up Landgate brought back so many memories of childhood walks with my cousin Pat & my Aunt Ivy's chocolate cake ( "Best in the world": Definitely).

And then were outside The George.

The first pub I ever went to; aged 3 weeks !
This Sunday 13 July it will be 60 years to the day since that first visit with Dad.

Jeff and I walked up West Street and through the Church gardens and the Gun Garden to the Ypres Castle pub.

As for the scallops... " Best in the world !".

After lunch it was off to Peasmarsh and Newenden and on through the Hursts: Sandhurst, Hawkhurst, Ticehurst & Wadhurst.

We briefly stopped at the Oak & Ivy. The plan is to stop there for re-fuelling on the bike ride

And finally it was  down Warwick Park in to the Pantiles at Tunbridge Wells.

Our final stop, the Duke of York.

The 50th pub we had  passed since starting in Warrior Square !!

----

This is going to be a hell of a challenge for me.
   Some 45 miles.
Not to mention all the pubs !!!

I hope you will be able to come along to help me on my way.

As my old history teacher, Brigadier P F "Foxy" Wells, used to say:
Boys, in this life you get an E for Effort.
You only get an A for Achievement.

Onward, Ric

Are you in training ?

Hi everyone !

Are you in training for Riding with Ric - It’s Been a Good Life on Sunday 17 June 2012?

We leave from Warrior Square Station and ride past 66 Warrior Square.

And very, very soon we will be at The White Rock Hotel.

The White Rock Hotel
Real Ale: We serve a constantly changing selection of real ales - all sourced from local Sussex based breweries and we are listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2012.

On Saturday 1 September 1948 my Dad & Grandad called in for a quick pint.

Who knows, we may too !!

John Squire thinks that the Ride may never re-start and we will spend the rest of the day in the pub … But we have other Pubs to visit.

Our next Pub - the first one I ever went into to - will be The George in Rye High Street , where there is a Story to tell …..

So it’s on with the training.

Riding with Ric

Hi everyone !

Welcome to the first blog from Riding with Ric.

On Thursday 21 June 2012  I turn 60.

The previous Sunday - 17 June  2012 - come & join me on a bike ride from Hastings via Rye to Tunbridge Wells.

It would be great if you could cycle the whole route .
But just a few miles would be good too !

Or find one of the many pubs along the route & cheer me on.
Better still - buy me a pint !!

The idea is to have some fun, share some memories & raise money for Rainbow Trust.
